City University of Hong Kong (CityU) brought together academics, professionals and investment experts at the Conference on Investment Risk and Wealth Management on 18 March to share cutting-edge knowledge and applied research on finance and investment.

The conference was organized by CityU's Department of Economics and Finance, exemplifying the University's efforts to promote linkages with the industry.

Professor Eden Yu Siu-hung, Head of the Department of Economics and Finance, said investment risk and wealth management were among the hottest areas in finance. The conference was organized in the spirit of knowledge-sharing, he added.

More than 300 guests, CityU alumni, undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as faculty members attended the event. Speakers from different fields in the financial sector provided valuable insights from years of hands-on experience.

"We have plenty to share, for example, our professional experience, personal views on our line of work and the development of a particular industry," Professor Yu said.

Mr Paul Chow Man-yiu, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, gave a keynote speech on the merger of exchanges and clearing houses around the world and the possible consequences brought about by this development.

During the conference, Mr Choi Yiu-kwan, Deputy Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, gave a presentation on the financial infrastructure for the wealth management industry in Hong Kong, including initiatives to facilitate further development. Meanwhile, Mr Kwok Kwok-chuen, an economist with the HKSAR Government, gave a talk entitled "Hong Kong's Economic Transformation – Popular Misconceptions Versus the Reality".

CityU academics also played an active role. Professor (Chair) Oliver Yau Hon-ming of Department of Marketing; Dr Gao Ting, Dr Peter Treadway and Mr Fred Au Wing-to, Adjunct Professors in the Department of Economics and Finance; and Dr Chan Yan-chong, Associate Professor in the Department of Management Sciences and MBA Programme Director, spoke about investment performance analysis, equities and bonds, hedge fund strategies, structured investment products, and macroeconomic analysis.

Other speakers at the conference included Mr Cho Yan-chiu, Executive Director of Hong Kong Economic Journal; Mr Rajeev Baddepudi, Senior Analyst of Eurekahedge; and Mr Clarence Yeung Yuk-fai, Head of Structured Products Department, Bank of East Asia.
