Dialogue Series with Consuls General

This series provides CityU students and staff with excellent opportunities to exchange ideas and learn about the latest developments around the world. Mr Rashid Yerishev, Consul General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Hong Kong and Macao SARs, will deliver the next in the series. His talk, which takes place online on 28 January, covers opportunities for future studies and career development in Kazakhstan. PhD graduate Dr Li Jing has been selected to receive the 2019 Hong Kong Young Scientist Award after a vigorous selection process and presentation at the Hong Kong Institution of Science (HKIS) Annual Conference in December 2020. Each year HKIS confers three winners in the fields of physical/mathematical, life, and engineering sciences. Dr Li, who is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, is the winner in the field of engineering science. Her supervisor was Professor Wang Zuankai of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean of College of Engineering. The previous winner of this award from CityU went to Dr Liu Yahua in 2015, also under Professor Wang’s supervision.

Dr Guo Yu, a 2019 PhD graduate of the Department of Computer Science (CS), together with his co-supervisors Professor Jia Xiaohua, Head and Chair Professor of CS, and Dr Wang Cong, Associate Professor in CS, along with researchers from Alibaba Group, Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Mishu Technology, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper “HybrIDX: New Hybrid Index for Volume-hiding Range Queries in Data Outsourcing Services” at the virtual 40th IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems held from 29 November to 1 December 2020 in Singapore.

Dr Song Linqi, Assistant Professor in CS, received the Excellence Award in the Tencent AI Lab Rhino-Bird Focused Research Program 2019 for his outstanding research on Event-Based Natural Language Understanding supported by the Tencent AI Lab Rhino-Bird Gift Fund. The programme aims to promote joint efforts between academia and the Tencent Corporation to undertake pioneering research in AI fields and address research problems in the industry applications.

Albacastor Technology Limited, a start-up under the Student Early Entrepreneurship Development Scheme and founded by Mr Hugo Chan Tsz-lung, Mr Peter Cheung Wing-hong and Mr Henry Lam Wah-shing, graduates from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2018, won the Community Engagement Award in the Blue Innovation Challenge 2020. The start-up was co-funded by CityU and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The goal is to build an intelligent, high-efficient, and safe healthcare environment by developing automated robots.
