Prof. WANG Lidai and Prof. ZHU Guangyu in the Department of Chemistry developed “sono-sensitized chemotheraphy” (SSCT), which is a new form of ultrasound-activated chemotherapy, to further enhance the precision for eradicating deeper tumours with centimetre range of tissue penetration and minimizes side effects.

The research team invented the SSCT technique by developing cyaninplatin. The ultrasound-activated cyaninplatin can effectively induce cancer cell oxidation, eventually leading to mitochondrial DNA damage and cancer cell death.

The team’s work has been described and published in Science Advances under the title “An Ultrasound-Activatable Platinum Prodrug for Sono-Sensitized Chemotherapy”. (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adg5964).
