President advises secondary school students on lifelong learning
A commitment to lifelong learning is essential for career success, according to the President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) speaking at two local schools recently.
In his addresses at the Speech Day cum Prize Presentation Ceremony of Ning Po No. 2 College and the Sik Sik Yuen Joint Secondary School Prize Presentation Ceremony on 21 and 22 November, respectively, Professor Way Kuo also emphasised the need to integrate teaching and research.
“To understand and adapt to different situations in an uncertain future, students must continue to learn and maintain the spirit to conduct research during the learning process. That’s why CityU promotes the integration of teaching and research,” he said.
By way of explanation, Professor Kuo pointed out that the custom, practices and overall environment vary throughout the world, such as the way traffic signals in Hong Kong and the US differ, or that it is difficult to get a place at a university in Hong Kong, but relatively easier to graduate, yet it is the other way around in the US.
So students should keep in mind that the principle of learning and paying attention to the world around you go hand-in-hand with the principle of research, he added, whether they wished to pursue further studies in higher education or join the workforce after graduation.
After the Sik Sik Yuen ceremony, Professor Kuo shared with students his experience about learning, arguing that graduation did not mark the end of the learning journey and advising students to try their best to find ways to overcome difficulties they encounter.
