CityU School of Creative Media launches the major exhibition of faculty members
The Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) Grand Opening Festival showcases the work of the School of Creative Media faculty in a major new exhibition “The Burning Edge: Making space, activating form” at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) CMC yesterday (12 January).
The School of Creative Media (SCM) faculty is made up of world-renowned artists, designers and producers of content who set benchmarks and points of departure for our students. Their creativity profoundly informs the quality of their teaching and offers models of inspiration. They embody that spirit of discovery and innovation that is the hallmark of CityU, and also consolidate its international profile.
The officiating guests at the ceremony included Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Dean of School of Creative Media, Professor Lothar Spree, Former Director & Founder of EIKK European Institute of Cinema Karlsruhe; Dean of Department of Film/TV & Media Art, Director of Research Centre, College of Communication and Art, Tongji University, and Mr Robin Peckham, Curator of exhibition.
In his welcoming remarks, Professor Shaw said the eminent architect Daniel Libeskind, has given CityU an extraordinary environment to work in. “Digital technology is a terrain of astonishingly fast transformation and invention. Even so, long-standing traditions of the teacher-student relationship continue to inform education in this arena, especially where teachers’ pioneering work offers qualitative criteria that grounds student experiment in frameworks of philosophical reflection and existential responsibility,” he said.
He also expressed his gratitude to Mr Robin Peckham for his contributions to curate this great project, which makes the diverse research activities of the SCM faculty a stimulating exhibition experience.
Making a metaphor of the tangyang architectural modeling technique of the Qing court, the artists exploit new propositions offered by the site and open a path for the media qualities of architecture, giving visitors an exciting insight into the multifaceted creative energies that the SCM offers its students.
Participating artists include Oscar Au, Robert Ellis-Geiger, Fu Hongbo, Tobias Gremmler, Scott Hessels, Hui Nga Shu, Rita, Ip Yuk-Yiu, Linda Chiu-han Lai, Ulf Langheinrich, Julian Lee, Leino, Olli Tapio, Leung Chi Wo, Eddie Leung Hiu Ming, Phoebe Man, Hector Rodriguez, Daniel C. Howe, Bill Seaman, Phil Shek Ming Fai, Patrick Tam, Tamás Waliczky, S. Louisa Wei, Koala Yip, Samson Young and Yu Ka Ho.
The exhibition will run from 13 January to 30 April 2012, Monday to Saturday 12pm to 8pm (closed on Sunday, public holidays except in April). It is open to the public for free. For more information, please call 3442 6553 or visit www.cityu.edu.hk/cmc.
