Research Seminars

Editors’ Round Table: The Secret of Academic Publications

The Department of Media and Communication (COM) held the first research seminar of 2022/23 Semester A, “Editors’ Round Table: The Secret of Academic Publications,” on 19 September 2022. An in-house team, including Chair Professor Yi-Hui Christine HUANG, Professor Yu-li LIU, Professor Fiona Fui-Hoon NAH, Dr. Chris Fei SHEN, Dr. Ye SUN, and Chair Professor Jonathan ZHU, shared their experience and observation. Speakers provided practical advice on the rigorous academic publication process, including journal selection, manuscript preparation, and revision and publication. Dr. Fen LIN, the research coordinator, moderated the seminar. The seminar was well received, with over 120 audiences on zoom and more than 1100 on three other live streaming platforms. Keynote Speech and Invited Talk


Prof. Jonathan ZHU delivered keynote speech at ICA Preconference

On 23 May 2022, professor Jonathan Zhu delivered a keynote speech titled “Adding Evidence-based Evaluation (EbE) to Research on Chinese Internet Research” at the 19th Chinese Internet Research Conference, which is also one of the preconferences event in International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference 2022, Paris.

Prof. Yu-li LIU gave a talk at the IAMCR conference

On 12 July 2022, Professor Yu-li Liu was invited to give a talk titled “User, Technology, and Law in the Age of AI” at the Plenary Session of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Beijing 2022 Conference, Beijing, China.

On 13 July 2022, professor Christine Huang was invited to give a talk titled“Connecting Global and Asian Academic Journals in Journalism and Communication: Trends and Future Directions” at the IAMCR Beijing 2022 Conference, Beijing, China.

Prof. Fiona NAH gave a talk on CogSci 2022 Hong Kong Meetup

On 22 July 2022, professor Fiona NAH was invited to give a talk titled "A Study of Flow Experience Using Electroencephalogram (EEG)” for the CogSci2022 Hong Kong Meetup & Symposium.

Researcher Highlight

Prof Yu-Li LIU was appointed as the associate editor of Telecommunications Policy

Prof. Yu-li LIU was appointed as the associate editor of Telecommunications Policy (IF = 4.497, Q1 in Communication), which aims to bring developments in methodology, both qualitative and quantitative, to the attention of communication scholars.
   

Dr. Ye SUN won the Top Paper Award of ICA 2022

Dr. Ye SUN, her paper titled “Statistical power in experimental communication science: An assessment of two decades’ research (2001-2020)”, won the top paper award of the division of Communication Science & Biology in ICA 2022, Paris.
   

Prof. Jonathan Zhu co-chaired a session at Sunbelt 2022

Professor Jonathan Zhu co-organized and co-chaired a paper session on “Online Social Networks and Political Communication” at the 42nd Social Networks Conference of the International Network for Social Network Analysis (Sunbelt 2022), July 13, Cairns, Australia.

Prof. Christine HUANG received grants from CityU

Prof. Christine HUANG received several internal grants as PI and Co-PI from City University of Hong Kong, including three Nurturing Impact Cases Grants and one Strategic Research Grant.

Dr. Yuan WANG received grant from CityU

Dr. Yuan WANG’s project titled “An empirical study of relationship management and communication technology” received the Strategic Research Grant from City University of Hong Kong (HKD$100,000).

New Publication Alert

Dr. Guanxiong Huang Publishes in Top Communication Journals

Dr. HUANG Guanxiong, Associate Professor of Strategic Communication, recently published her research on temporal framing in Communication Research. This article reports a meta-analysis of experimental studies that examined the relative effectiveness of highlighting the proximal versus distal outcome of a recommended behavior in communication effort. Dr. Huang has another meta-analysis paper on bandwagon cues forthcoming in Communication Research co-authored with COM PhD graduate WANG Sai and PhD student CHU Tsz Hang.
