04 Sep 2023 (Mon)

Dr Tai-Quan (Winson) Peng, a PhD graduate of the Department of Media and Communication (COM), has recently been promoted to a full professor of Communication at Michigan State University (MSU) in the U.S.

Winson earned his PhD in Communication from CityU in 2008. Since then, he worked as a research fellow at the Web Mining Lab of CityU and served as a faculty member at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Macau and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, respectively. In 2016, Winson’s career trajectory reached new heights as he joined MSU as a tenured associate professor in the Department of Communication, which has been widely considered a global leader in the field, as attested by ranked among the top 10 in Communication and Media Studies in the QS World University Subject Rankings 2023.

Over the last 15 years since graduation, Winson has been involved actively in interdisciplinary research and education. His work transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, forging connections between communication and a spectrum of neighboring disciplines, ranging from computer and information science to political science and public health. He has published more than 50 articles in highly ranked SSCI and SCI journals, including Communication Research, Human Communication Research, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media & Society, Communication Methods and Measures, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, Journal of Informetrics, Journal of Medical Internet Research, Journal of Information Technology & Politics, among others.

Winson cofounded, along with his PhD supervisor Jonathan Zhu of CityU and other leading scholars on computational social science, the Computational Methods Interest Group (formally elevated to the Division in 2020) of International Communication Association (ICA) and served the Inaugural Chair of the Group. He is currently serving an Associate Editor of Journal of Communication, the flagship publication of ICA.

“Winson’s career successes have convincingly showcased the quality of our PhD training program,” Prof. Zhu said. Zhu further pointed out that COM has one of the best placement records for PhD graduates from CityU, with more than half a dozen working as tenured or tenure-track faculty members at major universities in the U.S., Europe, Mideast, and Hong Kong, in addition to more than a dozen at leading universities in mainland China.
