Prof. Zhu’s New Study to Appear in Journal of Communication

Jonathan Zhu, Chair Professor of Computational Communication Research of Department of Media & Communication and School of Data Science and Director of Centre for Communication Research (CCR), will publish a new study in the forthcoming issue of Journal of Communication, the official flagship of communication. Coauthored with Jiaying Hu and Jeffry Oktavianus, both research staff of CCR at the time of the study, the article examined the academic status of communication vis-à-vis other social science disciplines such as business, economics, political science, psychology, and sociology, based on mutual citations in 2010 and 2020. Contrary to widely held views that communication is either too dependent on or too involuted from other disciplines, Zhu and his coauthors found that communication research maintained balanced citation patterns, with a 20% self-citation rate, a 1:1 ratio between incoming and outgoing citations, and a high diversity of in- and out-citations across social science disciplines.  Miss Hu is now a doctoral student at Ohio State University and Dr Oktavianus an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
