COM Research Seminar: Hollywood in China by Prof Ying ZHU

06 Nov 2023 (Mon)

On November 6, 2023, Prof. Ying Zhu, founder of the journal "Global Storytelling: Journal of Digital and Moving Images," and renowned academic at Hong Kong Baptist University, delivered an insightful seminar, "Hollywood in China." Drawing on Prof. Zhu's extensive research, including her 2022 publication 'Hollywood in China: Behind the Scenes of the World's Largest Movie Market,' the seminar explored the intertwined relationship between the American and Chinese film industries. She traced the development of these industries from inception to the post-Covid era. Prof. Zhu highlighted the significant impact of political, economic, and cultural forces on Sino-Hollywood relations, all against the backdrop of broader Sino-US relations. Prof. Zhu argued that national interest plays a key role in this dynamic. The event was well-received, attracting an audience of about forty participants, comprising faculty members, PhD students, and scholars from different disciplines.
