3 COM students put into practice at White Christmas Street Fair, Quarry Bay in December

3 COM students, Li Ka Yui, Angel, Chan Ka Ying, Kathy and Li Chit Ying, Grace won an apprenticeship opportunity from July to December 2023 through a public competition organized by Swire Properties Placemaking Academy in May 2023.
Launched in 2019, the Swire Properties Placemaking Academy offered Hong Kong university students a rare opportunity to take the lead in designing, planning and executing the White Christmas Street Fair; the company’s annual year-end community celebrations, and one of Hong Kong’s biggest and most popular seasonal events. The White Christmas Street Fair has been launched for eleven years which offered various festive food and drink, live entertainment, and Christmas shopping. Moreover, the event has been raising funds for Operation Santa Claus to help those in need.
Our students participated in a six-month apprenticeship to ideate and organize the Street Fair after attending masterclasses by thought leaders from the design and community-planning industries. Grace Li (Year 3 student of Media and Communication) is responsible for the graphic design and live performance arrangements. Kathy Chan (Year 4 student of Media and Communication) and Angel Li (Year 4 student of Digital Television and Broadcasting) are responsible for F&B arrangements as well as staff souvenirs. Moreover, they are also responsible for the pre-event planning and communication with different stakeholders, media tour and MC on the event day and post-event arrangement work.
As told by the students, they have gained more insights in storytelling, event planning, sustainability development and placemaking. Moreover, they learned how to prepare the street fair through regular progress updates, clear task assignments, and coordination with the company’s various departments and business partners to ensure a successful event. Through these concerted efforts, they can work as good team players in organizing this meaningful event.
