PhD students showcase research results on The 12th Honours Symposium for Asian Graduate Students in Communication Research


 
Hosted by the Department of Media and Communication at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), The 12th Honours Symposium for Asian Graduate Students in Communication Research (Symposium) concluded successfully on 21 Apr 2024.  This annual Symposium achieves its goal of fostering scholarly dialogue, intellectual exchange, and research collaboration among PhD students. The Symposium was hold in Hong Kong once in 2016. This year, over 50 local and overseas PhD students from CityU, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Korea University, Nanyang Technological University, and Yonsei University as well as 6 young scholars from Mainland China were brought together, creating a vibrant platform for knowledge sharing and academic growth.
 


The symposium spanned two productive days (20-21 Apr 2024) of rigorous discussions, insightful presentations, and engaging workshops. Participants delved into a diverse range of topics that are crucial to the field of communication research. These included health and consumer communications, political communication in Asia and Europe, news and user engagement, news, information veracity, user behaviors and media literacy, as well as authenticity, attitudes and influence in the digital era. Additionally, an engaging workshop and discussion session focused on the academic job search in the Asia-Pacific region, providing valuable insights and guidance to the aspiring scholars.
 


Prof Yi-Hui Christine HUANG, Head & Chair Professor of Communication and Media of Department of Media and Communication at CityU welcomed the guests and PhD students and delivered an opening remark, “CityU puts conscientious efforts in providing high-quality PhD program. During the past 5 years, The Department of Media and Communication rank between 27 and 50s in the QS World University Rankings by subject of Communication & Media. Our recent result in The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2024/25 exercise is encouraging, 5 COM candidates (out of 6) have been selected for the award.” Prof Huang also encouraged PhD students to achieve international collaboration and partnership which is the vital ingredients for research success.
 


6 young scholars from Mainland China shared the fruitful insights with the PhD students, they are Prof ZHOU Min, Dr DENG Tianqi, Dr DOU Weihong, Dr JIA Yu, Dr LI Dajun, and Dr PAN Wenjing.
 


The Symposium facilitated meaningful interactions and knowledge exchange among the students, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual learning. PhD students from various universities had the opportunity to present their research findings, share innovative ideas, and receive constructive feedback from their peers and established scholars in the field of communication. It also created a platform for networking and establishing connections with fellow researchers and academic professionals from different institutions and cultural backgrounds.
