New appointments

Professor Chan Chi-hou, Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, will assume the concurrent appointment of Vice-President (Community Engagement) on 1 December 2023. Professor Chan and his team will endeavour to strengthen the University’s connection, interaction and collaboration with the local community, particularly primary and secondary schools, youths and older people in local neighbourhoods, to bring about a positive change with collective benefits for the University and the community. Professor Wong Hang of the Department of Electrical Engineering will take up the role of Associate Vice-President (Community Engagement) to support all the new initiatives.

Professor Jason Derrick Harding has been appointed Head of the Department of English, effective 3 October. Professor Harding comes to CityU from Durham University, UK, where he was Associate Director and a founding member of the Centre for Modern Conflicts and Cultures. He is a world leader in modern literature and intellectual history and has an outstanding publication record.



City University Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Hong Wanjin, Research Director of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore, delivered a Distinguished Lecture titled “Investing in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Economy” on 3 October. The speaker shared his experience working at IMCB and some examples of their discoveries, collaborations and innovations to highlight the importance of investing in science and technology for a sustainable economy. Kudos

Ms Lilian Fu Wing-yan, an alumna from the School of Creative Media, won the BuSho (Budapest Short) Best Animation Award for her animation My Dear Son. This animation also won Best Animation at the 14th edition of the Toronto Women Film Festival and received an Honourable Mention at the Barnes Film Festival 2022.

Li Guangyan, Mao Gaoyu and Zhang Zhewen, PhD students in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), won the First Prize in the 2023 Cross-Strait and Hong Kong-Macao College Students Integrated Circuit and Electronic Design Invitational Competition for their project “RISC-V Based Lightweight Public-key Cryptosystem Design and Applications". They were supervised by Professor Ray Cheung Chak-chung in EE and Dr Liu Yao, a 2019 EE PhD graduate and currently Assistant Professor at Sun Yat-sen University. The competition was organised by the Chinese Institute of Electronics.

Shang Jiayu, a PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), won the Postgraduate Student Research Paper Competition 2022/23 organised by the IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter for his paper titled “CHERRY: A Computational Method for Accurate Prediction of Virus–prokaryotic Interactions Using a Graph Encoder–decoder Model”. His supervisor was Professor Sun Yanni in EE. The competition aims to promote computational intelligence among students in Hong Kong.
