New appointment

Professor Eddie Hui Chi-man was appointed Chair Professor of Urban Policy and Management in the Department of Public and International Affairs, effective from 5 December. Professor Hui is a professional with diverse experience in research and consultancy projects. His principal research interests are housing and urban studies.



HKIAS Forum on Advanced Electron Microscopy and Instrumentation

Leading scientists, including three Kavli and/or Wolf Prize Laureates, will meet to discuss achievements, challenges and perspectives in advanced electron microscopy and instrumentation and their applications in materials science, biology and physics at the HKIAS Forum on Advanced Electron Microscopy and Instrumentation, which will be held from 11 to 14 December. Way Kuo Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Jack Dongarra conducted a lecture on 5 December, titled "An Overview of High Performance Computing and Future Requirements". Professor Dongarra examined how high performance computing has changed over the past 10 years and is expected to continue to have a significant impact on numerical scientific software. Kudos

CityU won the “Safety Performance Award – Outstanding” in the 22nd Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award, organised by the Occupational Safety and Health Council. This is the fourth year in a row that CityU has won the award. The Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award aims to recognise organisations with outstanding achievements in the field of Occupational Safety and Health.

Professor Steve Wong Hang of the Department of Electrical Engineering was elected a Fellow of the IEEE, with effect from 1 January 2024. Professor Wong was awarded for his contributions in the development of magneto-electric dipole and L-probe feeds for wideband and reconfigurable antennas.

Three projects by CityU faculty won the Excellent Product Awards at the China Hi-Tech Fair 2023. The winning projects are the “CIMDA Elderly Care System”, by Centre for Intelligent Multidimensional Data Analysis Limited (CIMDA), led by Professor Yan Hong, Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering; “Compact semi-submersible mobility platform”, led by Professor Lu Jian, Dean of the College of Engineering; and “Novel micro LED technology”, led by Professor He Jr-hau, of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Professor Hui Yuk, of the School of Creative Media, received the Certificate of Commendation (Culture) for the Saint Francis Prize in Techno-Humanities (2024) from the Caritas Institute for his significant contribution to cultural and ecological thinking on contemporary life and society.

Ms Rita Hui Nga-shu, Instructor in the School of Creative Media, won the CNC Cash Award in the 2023 Golden Horse Film Project Promotion for her new film Endless Tenderness.

Li Rouxiang, PhD student in the Department of Computer Science (CS), along with external collaborators, won the Best Paper Runner-Up at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Mobility: Operations, Services, and Technologies. The winning paper, under the supervision of Professor Jason Xue Chun and Professor Guan Nan, of CS, is titled “Modeling and Property Analysis of the Message Synchronization Policy in ROS”.

A team comprising three BSc Computer Science students, For Lek-shyuen, Wong Yu-fai and Zhenishbek Uulu Talantbek, together with BEng Computer and Data Engineering student Hariyanto Vanessa Laurel, were Champions of the Hackathon at the 7th Hack A Day event, hosted by PwC Hong Kong.
