CityU Student Societies' Breakthrough Leadership amid Global Challenges

Contributor: Ms Yemmy Lam [Student Residence Office]

A group of CityU non-local student residents spared no pains to help other non-locals who could not return to Hong Kong by packing and storing their belongings on a voluntary basis amid the pandemic in June 2020. “Our peers are facing a dire need and this is exactly the moment we should lend a helping hand!” said the group leader, Danish Muhammad. Since bearing the responsibilities of President of International Society of CityU (ISOC), Danish has been putting every effort in serving his members and actively discussing the measures to assist students in settling their checkout at Student Residence Office. With support from Vice President of ISOC, Viviana Limin, and other committee executives, the group has accomplished a fine job from data research, quotation estimation, labour allocation to inventory management. The group expressed, “This illustrates our sense of mission and promise to our members. Although we have encountered various problems in the progress, learning from our experience is the key to growth.”

As Danish’s roommate and President of Pakistani Students' Association, Salik Muhammad also offered active support to the operation by recruiting around ten student residents and arranging them into groups of two to three in order to pack the belongings from the residents’ rooms. As quoted from Salik, “The students have sacrificed their personal time, energy and efforts.” While planning, Salik realised the importance of communication, hence spent a great deal of time on it during the early stage, such as matching and easing the residents’ worries through online live streams. He also emphasised, “As a person in charge, I have to maintain a balance between the mentalities of both the volunteers and the student residents. If there is an expectation gap, misunderstandings may occur.” In the end, more than 270 on- and off-campus student residents are benefited as a result of the groups’ strenuous efforts.

The student leaders are more than ready to welcome new residents through a series of online activities for the coming academic year!
