CityU Elite 100 Programme

Career Development

Career and Leadership Centre (CLC) of the Student Development Services organises “Elite 100 Programme” (E-100) with the view to grooming a group of selected third and final year students for essential job hunting skills so as to raise their employment profile in the domestic labour market that they can stand out from the crowd in the rigorous recruitment and screening processes of most reputable corporations.

Miss Janie Chan, majored in English Studies and graduated from CityU in 2019, was a participant of E-100. She is now one of the eight Management Trainees of Louis Vuitton, a “dream job” that many are looking for. Let’s listen to Janie’s sharing.

Q: Why did you apply for E-100?
Janie: At the beginning of my third-year study, I would like to take an internship to prepare for job hunting upon graduation. When I learnt about this Programme, I applied for it simply because I wished to equip myself with career-related knowledge.

Q: How did E-100 help you?
Janie: I have benefited from E-100 enormously in many different ways.

First, E-100 provided participants with training/workshops on business etiquette, including dining etiquette and networking skills. It turned out that these were the assessment criteria of Louis Vuitton. As part of the selection process, I was invited to have lunch with the staff of Human Resources department and the interviewers, which apparently was an assessment. The relevant training I received in E-100 helped equip me with good knowledge of proper table manners so I was able to perform decently and professionally with full confidence.

Besides, I attended a workshop on fostering professional image provided by E-100. This workshop helped transform my understanding of appropriate attire for an impressive interview.

Apart from the above, we also learnt CV writing skills in E-100. The seasoned trainers not only gave us professional advice on how to present our strengths and uniqueness in the CV and make it stand out from the crowd, but they also looked at the CV from the perspective of Human Resources department.

Furthermore, the mock interview and assessment centre offered by E-100 gave me many opportunities to practise and receive immediate feedback from professional trainers. “Good” practice makes perfect, even as basic as self-introduction. My confidence greatly boosted after rounds and rounds of “good” and “well-guided” practice supervised by professional trainers. I also acquired the skills necessary for group interviews, i.e. to collaborate effectively with other candidates to achieve a positive result.

E-100 also invited a former Administrative Officer of the HKSAR Government to give us very useful and practical advice, including how to analyse questions in written tests and answer them systematically and logically. Participants were also given a chance to think about how and what to answer, which helped enhance our ability to sit for the examinations for civil service recruitment.

Q: Anything else you would like to share with your fellow schoolmates?
Janie: CLC of CityU has provided us with many valuable resources. If we can make use of these opportunities, our employability and competitiveness can surely be enhanced.
